The first things I do.
The first things I do is listen to the track as it is and notice everything that is happening. I also listen to the lyrics – if there are any – to get an idea what the song is about. All these things help me to figure out the best approach to start with.
Mixing band recordings.
If the mix is recorded with microphones, like a band recording. I start cleaning up the unwanted frequencies and noises. I would consider this as “textbook mix setup”. Then I mix every track to fit the song by mostly using analog style equalizers, compressors, reverbs and delays.

Starting with the foundation.
I always start with the foundation. This would be an interpretation of what I noticed to be the most important part of the song. This could be the drums/beat or a specific guitar/key theme or sometimes even the vocal for example.
Enhancing the vibe.
One of the most important parts of mixing besides the technical stuff is to enhance the vibe of the song. To me, mixing is not just about giving it a nice tonal balans, but also creating an atmosphere that enhances the character and personality of the song. My goal is to let the sound of the song come to life in the mix.

Step by step
working
towards
the perfect mix
I listen to things that can sound better. Then I go in my “detail mode” and search for small things to improve the song even more, so that everyone can listen to the song repeatedly and enjoy every last second of it.
You will get a listen and are free to give some feedback if you have any. This way we’ll adjust the mix until we are excited about it!
